Spend one lively hour at Samba Fit in Ipanema learning samba basics from Carla, Ranaa, or Gaby, instructors who have performed with major samba schools. The small group class includes photos, videos, and a chance to wear Carnival costumes at the end.

“It is a bus with only one level- up top with no shade at all. It was hot! Since there weren’t ear plugs, it was just a recording over speaker- you couldn’t really hear what they were saying. I thought we’d get closer to Christ the Redeemer but it was just in the distance. At least they sold cold beer on board….”
Ride Rio’s historic Santa Teresa tram, walk through the bohemian hillside district, descend the Selarón Steps, and explore Lapa and Cinelândia with an English, Spanish, and Portuguese-speaking guide. Head to Teatro Fashion Mall for an 80-minute Ginga Tropical performance featuring 22 dancers, 8 musicians, samba, forró, axé, funk, country dance, capoeira, and regional folklore. You also join a samba lesson and may pose with costumed performers. The show begins at 9:25 PM.

Spend an evening at Rio’s Centro Cultural Veneza with live music, a samba class, and Ginga Tropical’s 90-minute show. Expect Brazilian music, regional dances, capoeira, colorful costumes, audience participation, drinks, and a Carnival-style finale. The theater is in Botafogo, near public transportation.

Meet Helena, Gustavo, Yan, Lena, or another English-speaking local guide near Angu do Gomes, then walk into Pedra do Sal for samba, stories, and a welcome drink. This is a real Carioca night out, not a staged show, so expect crowds, dancing, local artists, and a late finish.

Start with a beginner-friendly, one-hour samba class led in English, Spanish, or Portuguese by guides such as Marco or Bruno. Then travel with your instructor to Pedra do Sal on Monday or a samba club in Copacabana from Wednesday to Saturday, with entry and three hours of guidance included.

“We enjoyed the Samba class with Bruno. It was very relaxed and way more fun than we imagined. Sadly, we did not stay for the Caipirpirinha workshop. This was because in the information given, the start time of the event was stated as 7.15pm. However, the Samba didn't start until 8pm. We had to leave just as the Caipirpirinha workshop was starting. This was very disappointing especially as we had enjoyed the Samba class and the venue so much.”
Ride the Rio Samba Bus through Copacabana, Urca, Lapa, downtown, Ipanema, and Christ the Redeemer. You get live commentary in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, Brazilian music, Wi-Fi, and 26 listed stops. The $31 ticket is best for a broad city overview, not a perfectly timed transport service.

Spend about two to three hours with Ginga Tropical, a fast-moving Brazilian music and dance show covering samba, bossa nova, lambada, forró, capoeira, and regional folklore. Hotel pickup is offered from much of Rio’s South Zone, and the finale invites you onto the stage.

Spend about 3½ hours riding Rio’s historic yellow tram and walking through Santa Teresa, Lapa, and Cinelândia. Expect a small group of up to 12 people, a 9 a.m. start, and plenty of uphill and downhill walking.
